Importance of Mental Health in Truck Drivers
Today, there are over 3 million truck drivers in the United States. Workers in this growing occupation are at risk for a range of occupational health-induced conditions. Unfortunately, mental health is often put on the back burner. This is due to truck drivers spending large amounts of time alone, working long hours in isolated conditions. In a study published by the US National Library of Medicine, a random sample of 316 male truck drivers between the ages of 23 and 76 were given surveys at a large truck stop located within a 100-mile mile radius of Greensboro, North Carolina. A survey done on truck drivers and found significant issues affecting their mental health. To conclude, these issues were loneliness (27.9%), depression (26.9%), chronic sleep disturbance (20.6%), anxiety (14.5%), and other emotional problems (13%).
Many truck drivers suffer from mental health issues. However, most are reluctant to seek the help they need because they fear the risk of losing their medical certification. Therefore, staying on top of your mental health and taking the necessary precautions can reduce the many stressors that come with the occupation and enhance over-all mental health. One way to to stay ahead is by taking advantage of Employee Assistance Programs (EAP).
