July 11th – 17th is Operation Safe Driver week. During this week law enforcement from the US and Canada will be on the lookout for commercial and passenger vehicle drivers engaging in unsafe driving behaviors on the road. This week-long initiative will focus on speeding, due to an increase in traffic fatalities in the past year. According to the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), the estimated rate of fatalities on roads last year increased 24%, despite total miles driven decreasing by 13% due to the pandemic. During last year’s Operation Safe Driver week, over 71,000 warnings and citations, comprised of almost 43,000 traffic violations and 28,000 other driver violations.
In addition to the significant focus on speeding, Law enforcement will also be watching other dangerous driver behaviors such as:
- Reckless/Aggressive Driving
- Distracted Driving (or using your phone)
- Failure to use a seat belt
- Improper lane change
- Driving while impaired or under the influence
- Failure to obey traffic laws and devices
